TN to enact online gambling ban ordinance

Chennai, July 31 (SocialNews.XYZ) The government of Tamil Nadu is set to issue an ordinance with immediate effect to ban online gambling which includes betting and gambling and also regulate gambling which is addictive by limiting the time and money which are dedicated to them.

A high-level committee set up by the state government and headed by retired Madras High Court Judge, Justice K. Chandru, had recommended a ban on online gambling. The committee submitted its report to Chief Minister MK Stalin on June 27.


Chief State Secretary V. Irai Anbu had held a senior officials’ meeting on Saturday to ban online betting and gambling, but will not opt ​​for a strict ban on all online gambling . Instead, the government plans to restrict and regulate gambling and limit the time spent on online gambling to once a day or once a week. The amount of money to be spent on online games will also be limited.

Seventeen people have committed suicide in the past three years because of online gambling. The committee set up by the government has released a report that online games have become addictive in nature for those who play them and money is being lost in huge amounts.

The central government is also in talks with the states to introduce new legislation or changes to existing legislation to regulate the industry.

A Union government study put the number of people playing online games in the country at 400 million and is expected to reach 700 million by 2025.

Several political parties in the state including Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) have campaigned vociferously in the state to ban online gambling in the state.

However, sources within the government have told IANS that if a total ban is implemented, it will lead to several legal battles, and as a result, it is considering regulating gambling and only allowing an amount limited to spend within a specified period of time. to play online games.
