With 113 million downloads, the social media app owned by ByteDance was the world’s most downloaded off-game app in February for the second month in a row, according to statistics from research firm SensorTower. This figure represents a 96.5% year-over-year increase.
TikTok also won the # 1 spot in February Global Downloads both on the Apple App Store and google play, statistics have shown.
Indian users appeared to be the most obsessed with the short video app, with 41.3% of TikTok’s total February downloads coming from the South Asian country, followed by Brazil with 8.6%, according to the statistics.
Still, TikTok has drawn criticism from some US lawmakers who view the app as a threat to national security due to its handling of user data. Some government agencies in the United States have banned their employees from using the app on government-issued devices.
Other Chinese apps that proved popular in February included JOYshort video app owned I like and Helo, a regional language entertainment content app focused on India, also owned by ByteDance. The two apps ranked sixth and tenth in global downloads, respectively, SensorTower said, adding that Kuaishou, TikTok’s main competitor in China, failed to make the top 10 for the month.
WhatsApp became the second most installed non-game app in the world with 96 million downloads.
