So, I got a chance to experience the Street Fighter 6 beta test last weekend and all I have to say is wow. Street Fighter 6 is honestly getting ready to compete street fighter 2 as the best iteration of this beloved franchise.
Street Fighter 6 beta test
Thus, the Street Fighter 6 beta test only gave access to the hub. Although that meant arcade mode and story mode were locked, I was able to experience the online multiplayer element. The Hub lets you race, customize your avatar, and sit in front of an arcade cabinet to battle. Battles can be standard or with unique rules and modes. In any case, you will face players from all over the world (who connect to the same server as you).
Battles work exactly as you’d expect – you play as your selected character (for me it’s always Chun-Li) and fight for victory. The controls haven’t changed since my experience with the game at EGX 2022 and were as smooth as they were back then. You can choose classic controls with expected button combinations to perform moves or a streamlined modern approach that requires less memory to master!
When you first sit down in front of a machine, you are provided with a tutorial so you can learn the basics and then the real fun begins. Playing against opponents or watching other people’s matches is visually exciting and colorful to watch. Graphically, Street Fighter 6 is stunning to look at, and the character models are truly spectacular.
What I liked
The music, the visuals, everything is fantastic. What blew my mind at first was the avatar customization screen. Every feature, detail and aspect can be changed, modified and configured. Do you want to modify your eyebrows? You can. How about the eyes? Well, there are 38 different eye styles (yes, I counted!). scars, body type everything. Want to look like a muscular Santa Claus? Well, as shown in the image below… it’s doable too. Upon launching the game, I see myself spending an incredibly long time creating my avatar before even starting a single match.
Another cool feature showcased in the Street Fighter 6 beta test was crossplay. It’s cool if you have friends who play on different platforms. Worried that a platform might have an edge? Well, it didn’t seem to be the case during my play session, but you can select “platform only”.
Which hopefully will be improved
I have only experienced a few things that I would choose. First, there were some server connection errors. Although I attribute this to the fact that this was a beta test, I hope the server stability has improved.
Second, I wish there were options to redesign your avatar, although the customization is extensive, it was a bit daunting but unfortunately there didn’t seem to be a way to do it. Finally, it would have been nice to come back to the tutorial for a refresh from time to time!
I don’t know if these features will be added to The Hub, but hopefully these are features that will be included in the final version.
Street Fighter 6 is gearing up to be an exciting new installment in one of the biggest fighting game franchises. If the Street Fighter 6 beta test experience is anything to go on, it’s going to be huge. Online play, cross play, story mode, more casual games, and the most avatar customization I’ve seen in a while.
